A YouTube profile picture is the image beside your channel name on your channel page, your comments, and your videos, and YouTube Help says it renders at 98x98 pixels. To make one from your initials, type the letters above, pick two colors and a font, check the small previews, and download the 800x800 PNG.

How to make a YouTube profile picture with initials

  1. Type one to three letters, such as your initials, or a short word of up to 12 characters. The letters shrink to fit inside the circle YouTube shows.
  2. Pick a background color. Choose a swatch, or open the color picker and type your brand's hex code.
  3. Leave the text color on automatic to get black or white, whichever reads better on your background, or pick your own.
  4. Choose a font: Geist, your device's serif, or its monospace.
  5. Check the 24 px preview. If the letters are hard to read there, use fewer of them or more contrast.
  6. Download the PNG and upload it in YouTube Studio, as the next section shows.

Your browser draws the picture, so what you type stays on your device. An account with no picture already shows a letter: Google Account Help says you'll see your initials until you add one. Making your own lets you choose the letters, colors, and font.

How to change your YouTube profile picture

On a computer, YouTube Help gives these steps:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Customization, then Profile.
  3. Click Change and select an image from your computer. Adjust its size, then click Done.
  4. Click Publish.

In the YouTube app for Android, tap your profile picture, then Your channel. On iPhone and iPad, tap your profile picture, then View channel. Then tap Edit, tap your profile picture, choose a photo to upload, and tap Save. YouTube Help says a new picture may take a few minutes to update across YouTube.

Your YouTube picture and your Google Account picture are separate. YouTube Help says a new channel picture shows only on YouTube, and Google Account Help says changing your Google picture won't change your YouTube one, and can take a few days to reach every Google product.

What size should a YouTube profile picture be?

Upload a square of 800x800 pixels. YouTube Help gives no upload size, but the YouTube Data API serves channel pictures at 88x88, 240x240, and 800x800, the largest. Help sets the other rules: a JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG file, not animated, of 15 MB or less. Help also says “It’s best to upload a square or round image.”

How to keep letters readable at small sizes

Most places on YouTube show your picture smaller than 98 pixels. On youtube.com on a computer in October 2026, we measured it at 40 pixels under a video, 36 beside a comment, and 24 beside a reply or a search result. On the mobile site it was 32 beside the Subscribe button.

  • Use one to three letters. At 24 pixels, two letters drawn here stand about 10 pixels tall, and a 12-letter name under 3.
  • Keep the contrast at 4.5:1 or more, the bar WCAG sets for small text. The tool warns you below it.
  • Make the colors your own. YouTube's impersonation policy covers channels that copy another channel's “profile pictures, banners, or specific color schemes” to pose as it.
